# Check licences and insurance with the official body

Lesson 1 of [Vet a Wellness Room Builder](https://privatewellnessrooms.fyi/academy/vet-a-wellness-room-builder.md), 14 minutes.

Many buyers accept a claim or a copy. A better check goes to the source.

## Licences and registrations

Rules differ by country, state and city. Some places require a licence for some trades. Others do not. This course cannot tell you which apply to your project.

Do this instead:

1. Ask the firm which licences or registrations apply to the work, and who holds them.
2. Find the official register in your state or country.
3. Search the register yourself. Check the name, the number and the status.
4. Compare the name on the register with the name on the quote. A trading name can differ from the legal name. Ask the firm to explain any difference.

Do not rely on a certificate that the firm sends. Do not rely on the listing. The listing shows what the business or the place data reported.

## Insurance

Ask for proof of insurance. Ask who the insurer is, what the policy names and which dates it covers. Ask what it covers and what it leaves out. Ask your own insurer or a qualified adviser what you need for your home.

## Write it down

Keep the dates and the names of the people you spoke to. Keep a copy of what the register showed on the day you checked.
